INGREDIENT DICTIONARY

Sodium Benzoate

INCI: Sodium Benzoate / CAS #: 532-32-1

Sodium Benzoate is a water-soluble preservative used in cosmetic formulations to support microbial stability in pH-controlled systems.

Key benefits

  • Supports preservation systems
  • Effective in acidic formulations
  • Compatible with combination systems
  • Widely used across formulation types

Behaviour in formulations

Sodium Benzoate performs in aqueous and emulsion systems but requires an acidic pH to
function effectively.

Add to the water phase with mixing until fully dissolved. Adjust pH as required after incorporation.

Use level considerations

Use Rate (Min): 0.2
Use Rate (Max): 0.5

  • Leave-on: 0.2–0.5%
  • Rinse-off: 0.2–0.5%
  • Typically used in combination with other preservatives.

Starter Use Rate: 0.25–0.4% in combination systems

Typically used at 0.2–0.5% and requires pH adjustment to ensure efficacy.

Formulation summary

  • pH-dependent preservative
  • Requires acidic environment for efficacy
  • Typically used in combination systems
  • Suitable for aqueous and emulsion systems

Quality notes

High-purity USP grade Sodium Benzoate with verified assay (99.96%) and low moisture
content, supporting reliable formulation performance.
