Clay mask

What this formulation is

A structured suspension system designed to hold powders evenly while maintaining spreadability.

Clay mask

What this formulation delivers

  • Absorbs excess oil and impurities
  • Helps clarify and rebalance the skin surface
  • Provides a mattifying effect
  • Creates a more intensive clay mask compared to lighter systems
  • Adjustable strength depending on clay level

Before you begin

This formulation is designed as a starting point.

Small adjustments to ingredient levels will influence texture, absorption, and overall skin feel. Work within recommended usage ranges and adjust gradually.

Check ingredient compatibility, pH, and preservation once the full system is assembled.

Formulation approach

  • Build a water-based system with clay dispersed evenly
  • Use humectants to prevent excessive drying
  • Stabilise with light thickening if required
  • Maintain workable viscosity for application
  • Avoid over-drying systems

Example formulation

Water (qs to 100%)
Glycerin - 3–5%
Bentonite Clay - 15–20%
Xanthan Gum - 0.2–0.4%
Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol - 0.8–1.0%

Notes

Bentonite clay swells when hydrated and can significantly increase viscosity.

Add slowly to the water phase with mixing to avoid clumping. Hydration time may be required to achieve a smooth texture.

Higher usage levels
increase oil absorption but may also increase skin tightness after drying.

These formulations are provided as examples to support your own development. They are starting points, not finished systems.
