INGREDIENT DICTIONARY

INCI: Carbomer / CAS #: 9003-01-4

Carbomer is a synthetic polymer used in cosmetic formulations to create clear gels and control viscosity.

Key benefits

  • Creates clear gels
  • Provides precise viscosity control
  • High efficiency thickener
  • Stabilises formulations

Behaviour in formulations

Carbomer swells in water and forms a gel network when neutralised, increasing viscosity.

Disperse in water phase, then neutralise (e.g. NaOH or TEA) to activate thickening.

Use level considerations

Use Rate (Min): 0.1
Use Rate (Max): 0.5

  • Leave-on: 0.1–0.5%
  • Rinse-off: 0.2–0.5%
  • High efficiency thickener

Starter Use Rate: 0.2–0.3% for most cosmetic formulations

Typically used at 0.1–0.5% depending on desired viscosity.

Formulation summary

  • Water dispersible (requires neutralisation)
  • High-efficiency thickener
  • Produces clear gels
  • Requires neutralisation step
  • Provides precise viscosity control

Quality notes

High-purity cosmetic grade carbomer 940 with strong viscosity performance and low residual
solvent content, supporting consistent formulation results.
