FORMULATION OVERVIEW

Allantoin Powder

Allantoin is a well-established cosmetic active valued for its soothing, skin-conditioning and skin-smoothing benefits across skincare and personal-care formulations. It is particularly useful in products developed for dry, rough, sensitive or uncomfortable-feeling skin, helping support a softer, smoother and more comfortable skin feel.

For formulators, Allantoin provides useful functionality at relatively low use levels. Its keratin-softening properties make it particularly relevant where the formulation objective includes improving the feel of rough or flaky skin, while its soothing properties make it a practical addition to sensitive-skin, after-sun, facial and body-care formulations. Dennis recommends 0.1–0.5% across cosmetic applications.

JNA’s cosmetic-grade Allantoin is supplied to a defined ≥99.0% assay specification with documented USP-standard conformity, alongside controlled heavy-metal and microbiological specifications. This gives formulators a well-defined, documented active for formulation development through to repeat production.

Why Formulators Choose It

  • Soothing & skin comfort — Useful in formulations designed to support sensitive, stressed or uncomfortable-feeling skin.
  • Smooths rough-feeling skin — Keratin-softening functionality makes Allantoin particularly useful where improving rough or flaky skin feel is part of the formulation objective.
  • Effective at low use levels — Manufacturer guidance recommends 0.1–0.5%, allowing meaningful functionality without requiring a high active load.
  • Versatile skincare active — Suitable across toners, creams, lotions, after-sun products, cleansers and other face and body-care formulations.
  • Easy to build into moisture systems — Can complement humectants, emollients and other skin-conditioning ingredients within more complete skincare formulations.
  • Documented cosmetic grade — JNA's supplied material has a defined ≥99% assay specification, USP-standard conformity and controlled quality parameters

Why Formulators Choose This Ingredient

Low-Level Functional Active

Provides useful conditioning functionality at relatively low formulation concentrations.

Useful for Rough-Skin Formulas

Keratin-softening functionality makes it particularly relevant where roughness, flaking or hardened-feeling skin is part of the formulation brief.

Complements Multi-Active Systems

Can sit alongside humectants, emollients and other cosmetic actives without needing to define the structural system of the formulation.

Established Formulation Versatility

Useful across numerous skincare formats, from lightweight aqueous products through to emulsions and targeted body-care formulations.

Technical Documents

Technical documentation available for this ingredient.

Available by request. Batch-specific Certificates of Analysis provide the analytical results applicable to the supplied Allantoin batch and allow those results to be assessed against the established material

FORMULATOR FAQ

Allantoin FAQ

Working With Allantoin

Ask a Question
Why can Allantoin be difficult to dissolve in water?

Allantoin is only slightly soluble in cold water, so simply stirring it into a cool water phase may result in slow or incomplete dissolution. The manufacturing TDS recommends using hot deionised water or pre-dissolving it in glycerin before incorporation.

Can Allantoin be pre-dissolved in glycerin?

Yes. The manufacturing TDS specifically recommends pre-dissolving Allantoin in glycerin as an alternative to dissolving it in hot water. Once completely dissolved, it can be incorporated into the formulation water phase according to the recommended processing method.

hy might Allantoin crystallise in a finished formulation?

Crystallisation can occur if the amount of Allantoin exceeds what the formulation's solvent system can maintain in solution, particularly as the product cools or changes during storage. Complete initial dissolution does not by itself establish long-term stability, so finished formulations should be assessed over time.

Can Allantoin be combined with other soothing or hydrating actives?

Yes. Allantoin can be incorporated into multi-active systems alongside suitable humectants and skin-conditioning ingredients. Each combination should be evaluated within the complete formulation for compatibility, processing requirements and finished-product stability.

Is Allantoin only useful for sensitive-skin formulations?

No. Its soothing properties make it particularly relevant to sensitive-skin products, but its skin-conditioning and keratin-softening functionality also makes it useful across facial care, body care, after-sun products, toners and mild cleansing formulations.

Does using more Allantoin provide better performance?

Not necessarily. Dennis recommends 0.1–0.5%, and increasing the concentration can also make maintaining complete dissolution more challenging. Select the level according to the formulation objective and solvent system rather than assuming the highest concentration will produce the best finished product.
