FORMULATION OVERVIEW

Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate

Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate is a mild, non-ionic hydrophilic surfactant, solubiliser and emulsifier used in cosmetic and personal care formulations.

With excellent water solubility and an HLB of 15–16, it can help incorporate essential oils and other lipophilic ingredients into water-based formulations while also providing emulsifying and mild surfactant functionality.

Its versatility makes it suitable for facial cleansers, body washes, shampoos, lotions, creams, essences and other skincare and haircare formulations.

Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate can be used as a main emulsifier, co-emulsifier or solubiliser depending on the formulation and desired function.

As a PEG-free, non-ionic solubiliser and emulsifier, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate offers a versatile option for modern cosmetic and personal care formulations.

Typical use:
0.1–1% as a solubiliser or co-emulsifier
0.5–3% as a main emulsifier
2–5% in cleansing formulations

For emulsification, add to the water phase at 60–80°C. For solubilising applications, pre-mix with the oil-soluble ingredient or fragrance before incorporation.

FAQ - Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate

Formulator FAQ

Ask a Question
Can Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate solubilise essential oils and fragrance oils?

Yes. Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate can be used to help incorporate small amounts of lipophilic materials, including essential oils and fragrance oils, into water-based formulations. The amount required will vary depending on the oil or fragrance being solubilised, so small-scale testing is recommended to determine the optimum ratio and clarity.

Will Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate make a formulation completely clear?

Not necessarily. Final clarity depends on the oil or fragrance being incorporated, its concentration, the solubiliser-to-oil ratio and the overall formulation. Some systems may produce a clear result while others may remain slightly hazy or translucent. Formulation trials are recommended where clarity is important.

Can Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate replace Polysorbate 20 or PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil?

It can be considered as an alternative solubilising ingredient in some formulations, but it is not a direct 1:1 substitute. Different solubilisers can require different ratios to achieve the desired clarity, stability and sensory result, so the formulation should be re-evaluated when changing ingredients.

Can Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate be used without another emulsifier?

It can function as a main emulsifier in suitable oil-in-water systems, but whether it can be used alone depends on the oil phase, ingredient concentrations and desired finished product. More demanding emulsions may benefit from a complementary emulsifier or stabilising system, and finished-formula stability testing is essential.

Is Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate suitable for cold-process formulations?

For solubilising applications, it may be incorporated without a traditional heated emulsification process by pre-mixing it with the oil-soluble material before addition to the formulation. For emulsification, the supplier recommends adding it to the water phase at 60–80°C.

Is Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate the same as Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate or other polyglyceryl esters?

No. Although these ingredients belong to the same broader family of polyglyceryl fatty-acid esters, the fatty-acid component and resulting properties differ. They should not automatically be treated as interchangeable ingredients or substituted at the same use level.
