FORMULATION OVERVIEW

Sunflower Oil (High Oleic)

High Oleic Sunflower Oil is a lightweight cosmetic carrier oil and emollient used to improve spreadability, skin conditioning and sensory balance in oil-based and emulsified formulations.

Its high-oleic profile provides a relatively light, smooth skin feel while offering improved oxidative stability compared with conventional high-linoleic sunflower oil. It is well suited to facial oils, body oils, creams, lotions and balms where a versatile, non-heavy emollient is required.

JNA supplies a cosmetic-grade high-oleic sunflower oil selected for consistent formulation performance and controlled quality specifications.

Sunflower Oil - FAQ

Working with Sunflower OIl

Ask a Question
Why is Sunflower Oil often used as a go-to emollient in cosmetic formulations?

Sunflower Oil is a versatile plant-derived emollient and carrier oil that provides softness, lubrication and good spreadability across a wide range of cosmetic formulations. It can form a substantial part of an oil phase or be blended with other emollients to fine-tune richness, slip and after-feel, making it a practical foundation ingredient for both emulsified and anhydrous formulations.

Why choose High Oleic Sunflower Oil instead of conventional Sunflower Oil?

High Oleic Sunflower Oil contains a greater proportion of oleic acid and a lower proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids than conventional high-linoleic sunflower oil. This fatty-acid profile generally provides greater oxidative stability, making high-oleic grades particularly attractive where formulators want the versatility of Sunflower Oil with improved resistance to oxidation.

How does Sunflower Oil compare with Jojoba Oil or Olive Squalane?

They serve different roles within an emollient system. Sunflower Oil is a triglyceride oil, Jojoba Oil consists predominantly of liquid wax esters, and Squalane is a lightweight hydrocarbon emollient. Sunflower provides a versatile carrier-oil base, while Jojoba and Squalane can be used to alter slip, richness, spreadability and after-feel. They can also be blended rather than treated strictly as alternatives.

Can Sunflower Oil be blended with other carrier oils and emollients?

Yes. High Oleic Sunflower Oil works well as part of a blended emollient system and can be combined with ingredients such as Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Olive Squalane. Blending allows formulators to adjust the richness, slip, spreadability, absorption profile and overall sensory character of the finished product.

Should Vitamin E be added to formulations containing Sunflower Oil?

Vitamin E can be added to the oil phase as an antioxidant where additional oxidative protection is desired, particularly in formulations containing oxidation-sensitive oils. Whether it is required will depend on the complete oil phase, packaging and intended shelf life. Vitamin E should not be confused with a preservative - it helps address oxidation rather than microbial contamination.

What should I consider when formulating with High Oleic Sunflower Oil?

Consider Sunflower Oil as part of the complete emollient system rather than in isolation. Its concentration, the other oils and emollients present, desired skin feel, oxidative stability and packaging can all influence the finished product. In emulsions, assess its contribution to the total oil phase; in anhydrous products, evaluate the complete oil blend for sensory performance and long-term stability.
